Our Very Own Dancing Queen

Some of my own first memories are of tap shoes and tu-tus and the little studio/gym beneath the liquor store at Harmony Road and College Avenue. It was here that once a week my mom took me -- dressed in a black leotard and black tights like catwoman herself -- for ballet, tap and gymnastics class. I was 4 years old and I still remember one of my favorite parts was at the end of each class when every student would get a coloring sheet to take home and color. As I fast forward 30 years, I realize my mom could have saved a lot of money by buying a coloring book. But thankfully she could foresee the joy that dance and gymnastics would bring to my life and she kept on paying for it (or making my dad pay for it)...for the next 14 years.

Now Saylor is carrying the torch, though it's not all that graceful. Every Thursday, she is part of a ballet/tap class at her school through a program with Loveland Dance Academy.

On her second day of class she was actually asked to leave dance and go back to her classroom because she was doing her "own version" of dance and not listening, but she quickly straightened up and we're making great progress. Her first recital is June 13th. She shows me all her "moves" every Thursday night and, so far, they all look like the same 3 moves and there's not a lot of finesse involved. None, in fact.

But it's darling nonetheless. If anyone wants to join us for Saylor's stage debut on June 13th at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center, shoot me an email and I'll get you tickets.
