3 Pounders need their JAVA!

Steve got home Friday and, just as I'd hoped, Bohdy hit exactly 3 pounds the day of his daddy's return! Good boy! That milestone was sort of overshadowed by a few speedbumps on Friday. When I met with the doctors on Friday morning I learned he had 9 "events" overnight -- events meaning apnea or bradycardia (a.k.a. Brady) episodes in which his little body forgets to breath (apnea) and then his heart rate drops too low ("Brady"). His oxygen saturation was also dropping into the 70s and low 80s, which is too low. He had been on a caffeine dose for weeks and they took him off of it a few days earlier so the doctors decided to give him another dose of caffeine. I guess this just helps stimulate some of the bodily functions like breathing, since preemies don't come into this world knowing how to do all these things without a little help. Bohdy also went back on oxygen, so another tube is back on his face, but he's getting used to that and takes it like a champ.

Anyway, the caffeine and oxygen did the trick and yesterday when I got there he had NO events all night and was happily sleeping with his O2 numbers in the 90s (as shown in the photo above). I know all these little setbacks are totally normal for preemies. It's just that he has been sailing through with so few problems that even the most normal little setback makes my heart sink and sends me into a temporary tizzy. But all is good. I snuggled with him for almost 2 hours last night ... I love staring at his chubby cheeks. Yes, chubby!!!

  1. So glad he hit 3 pounds-hope he can just put on the weight now!

I can imagine how scary it would be to see his numbers drop-glad they fixed it! And who can blame him?! I need my caffeine to function normally too. ;)

He is just the cutest little guy.

  2. Oh, how little boys (and girls) can touch the
hearts of their Nana and Papa! What a joy to see these precious pictures of you looking so good and knowing that you had a good day with Mommy and Daddy....cuddling and sharing those quiet moments that will stay with them forever. I pray that God will place His guardian angels all around your little bed and that He will touch you with his healing hand. While I am sleeping, I am imagining you in your small sanctuary under the watchful eyes of your caregivers...I hope they know how much we appreciate their dedication to you and all your 'little friends'. Pleasant dreams my precious one. Mommy has told me how incredible it is to look into your eyes and I know it warms her heart...can't wait to do that and to rock you like I did your Daddy and sing "Twinkle, twinkle, little star"..nite,nite.
