Today is Prematurity Awareness Day

Today is the March of Dimes' Prematurity Awareness Day (and November is Prematurity Awareness Month). I honestly had no real idea what the March of Dimes did until my baby was suddenly and unexpectedly part of its cause. It has certainly been educational and eye-opening for me to see first hand the delicate process of nurturing and caring for a premature, underdeveloped baby. Saylor came into the world so 'ready' ... she could breath, eat, suck, swallow, be touched, be held ... so many things we take for granted with a full-term baby. Little Bohdy has had to learn a lot in his short 5 1/2 weeks and still has some milestones to go before we bring him home. We cannot say enough about the staff of doctors (Dr. Paisley, Dr. MacRitchie and Dr. Satterwhite) and nurses (there are too many to name here but each one has been an angel to Bohdy!) at Poudre Valley Hospital's NICU.

The March of Dimes mission is partly to provide support for families with preemies in the NICU. Having been shown so much kindness and care by the PVH NICU staff, I can only hope others around the country and world have a similar experience. I created a 'virtual band' in Bohdy's honor on the March of Dimes Web site. Click here to view it.
